What Does Acupuncture Feel Like?
Everything you need to know about the acupuncture experience, from what the needles feel like to what conditions it can help with.
If you have never tried acupuncture, the idea of needles can be intimidating. But the reality is very different from what most people imagine. Acupuncture needles are nothing like the needles used for shots or blood draws. They are extremely thin (about the width of a human hair) and designed to slide gently into the skin with minimal sensation.
At Dynamic Natural Medicine in Snohomish, WA, Dr. Jennifer Read, EAMP uses gentle insertion techniques refined through years of training at Bastyr University and clinical practice. Most patients report feeling little more than a slight pinch, and many feel nothing at all.
What You Might Feel During Acupuncture
At Insertion
You may feel a brief, slight pinch or tap as the needle passes through the skin. Some points are more sensitive than others. Hands and feet tend to be felt more than arms or back. Many insertion points produce no sensation at all.
De Qi — The Therapeutic Sensation
Once the needle is in place, you may notice a sensation called "de qi" (pronounced "duh chee"). This is often described as a gentle warmth, tingling, heaviness, or a dull ache around the needle. In Chinese medicine, de qi signals that the treatment is activating your body's healing response. It is not painful. Most patients find it surprisingly pleasant.
During the Session
After all needles are placed, you rest quietly for 20–30 minutes. This is when acupuncture's deeply relaxing effects set in. Many patients experience a calm, meditative state. It is very common for patients to fall asleep during treatment, a sign that the nervous system is shifting into a restorative mode.
After Treatment
Most people feel relaxed, calm, and energized after acupuncture. Some experience immediate relief from pain or tension. Occasionally, patients notice mild soreness at a needle site, slight fatigue, or emotional release. These are all normal responses that typically resolve within a day.
Can Acupuncture Help with Sinus Problems?
Yes, sinus conditions are one of the most common reasons patients seek acupuncture. In the Pacific Northwest, where seasonal allergies, damp weather, and wildfire smoke create a perfect storm for sinus issues, acupuncture offers a drug-free approach to relief.
Acupuncture points around the face, head, and hands are used to promote sinus drainage, reduce inflammation, and support immune function. At Dynamic Natural Medicine, Dr. Read often combines acupuncture with Chinese herbal medicine and dietary recommendations for thorough sinus support. Conditions that respond well to acupuncture include:
- ✓ Chronic sinusitis and sinus pressure
- ✓ Allergic rhinitis (seasonal and year-round allergies)
- ✓ Sinus headaches and facial pain
- ✓ Post-nasal drip
- ✓ Nasal congestion and stuffiness
What Else Can Acupuncture Help With?
Beyond sinus issues, acupuncture at Dynamic Natural Medicine in Snohomish is used to address a wide range of conditions:
