What to Ask a Naturopathic Doctor
Preparing for your first visit? Here are the most important questions to ask, and what to expect from the answers.
Visiting a naturopathic doctor for the first time can feel unfamiliar, especially if your healthcare experience has been limited to conventional medicine. Knowing what to ask helps you evaluate whether a naturopathic doctor is the right fit for your health goals, and helps your ND understand what matters most to you.
Whether you are considering naturopathic medicine for yourself, your child, or your whole family, these questions will help you make an informed decision. At Dynamic Natural Medicine in Snohomish, WA, Dr. Jennifer Read welcomes these conversations. They are the foundation of the patient-centered care she provides.
7 Questions to Ask Your Naturopathic Doctor
1. What is your training and background?
A licensed naturopathic doctor (ND) has completed an accredited four-year doctoral program that includes over 1,000 hours of clinical training and two sets of board exams. Dr. Read earned her Doctorate in Naturopathic Medicine and a Master of Science in Acupuncture, both from Bastyr University, one of the most respected naturopathic medical schools in the country.
2. What conditions do you specialize in?
This helps you understand whether the ND is a good fit for your specific concerns. Dr. Read at Dynamic Natural Medicine specializes in pediatric naturopathic medicine, fertility and pregnancy support, functional medicine, acupuncture, and general family wellness care.
3. What diagnostic tests do you use?
Naturopathic doctors use many of the same diagnostic tools as conventional physicians (blood work, imaging, physical exams) and may also recommend specialty testing such as full hormone panels, food sensitivity testing, gut health analysis, and nutrient assessments.
4. How do you develop treatment plans?
Ask how the ND approaches treatment and what types of therapies they use. Dr. Read develops individualized plans that may include nutrition, herbal medicine, targeted supplementation, acupuncture, lifestyle modifications, and conventional medications when indicated.
5. Do you accept my insurance?
Many insurance plans in Washington cover naturopathic visits. Dynamic Natural Medicine accepts Premera, Regence, Lifewise, Moda, Molina, First Choice Health, Amerigroup/Wellpoint, and Washington Apple Health. We also offer a 20% time-of-service discount for patients paying out of pocket.
6. How do you coordinate with my other doctors?
A good naturopathic doctor works collaboratively with your existing healthcare team. Dr. Read regularly coordinates with primary care physicians, specialists, and other providers to ensure your care plan is aligned and thorough.
7. What should I expect at my first visit?
Initial naturopathic consultations are typically longer than conventional appointments, usually 60 to 90 minutes at Dynamic Natural Medicine. This allows time for a thorough health history, discussion of your goals, and often a physical examination. Come prepared with a list of medications, supplements, and any recent lab results.
How Much Does a Naturopathic Doctor Cost?
Naturopathic doctor costs vary depending on visit type, length, and whether your insurance covers naturopathic services. In Washington State, many insurance plans include naturopathic benefits, making care more accessible than many people expect.
At Dynamic Natural Medicine, initial visits are longer (60–90 minutes) to allow for a detailed health assessment, and are priced accordingly. Follow-up visits are shorter and less expensive. We accept most major insurance plans including Premera, Regence, Lifewise, Moda, Molina, First Choice Health, Amerigroup/Wellpoint, and Washington Apple Health.
For patients paying out of pocket, we offer a 20% time-of-service discount. Visit our fees page for current pricing, or contact our benefits specialist Laura at 425-503-6739 to verify your coverage before your first visit.
